Will Dental Implants Rust In My Mouth?

Dental implants are widely considered to be the premier form of tooth replacement available today because they bring back the entire tooth from root to crown, can last decades, and blend perfectly with natural teeth. But something that causes concern for many patients is the fact that they are made of metal, more specifically titanium. While lasting for a long time is great…won’t that metal in your mouth eventually rust?

This makes sense on the surface, but if you find yourself reconsidering implants because of this risk, keep reading to learn why you shouldn’t give it another thought.

Dental Implants Are Different

Everyone has seen an old car, bike, or piece of metal that has been exposed to the weather for a long time and developed a flakey, reddish substance known as rust. It’s a clear sign that the material is corroded and weak, meaning it is essentially a liability for anyone who uses it. Getting a cut or scrape from rust is also associated with tetanus, which fortunately isn’t a big concern in the U.S. thanks to the availability of vaccines.

This type of rust is called “iron oxide” because it’s what happens when iron and oxygen come in contact with each other. However, titanium doesn’t react to air this way.

Instead, it forms titanium oxide, which is an extremely thin and clear layer. Not only is it virtually invisible, but it also seals off the metal and essentially protects it. That means dental implants actually become more stable and secure in your mouth after they are placed, not less!

The Real Issue

While rust certainly doesn’t cause problems for dental implants, the actual threat is oral bacteria. Implants themselves can’t develop cavities, but unchecked bacteria can attack and weaken the gums and bone that support the new tooth, leading to pain and instability.

Fortunately, preventing this from happening involves a few steps you’re likely already familiar with:

  • Brushing and flossing daily is the most effective way to keep the bacteria in your mouth in check.
  • Rinsing with an alcohol-free mouthwash once or twice a day can help clean spots brushing and flossing misses.
  • Avoiding habits like smoking, vaping, and dipping can go a long way in preventing infection around implants.
  • Visiting your dentist twice a year for checkups and professional cleanings can stop most dental issues (including implant-centric ones) before they even start.

So while dental implants don’t really rust, they aren’t invincible! Thankfully, routine oral hygiene is all someone needs to safeguard their new teeth, leading to decades of bright smiles to come.
