What Are Dental Sealants?

A dental sealant is a thin layer of clear resin that is placed over a child’s molars in order to keep decay-causing food particles and bacteria from accumulating on them.

The concept is similar to applying wax to your car or stain to wood—it establishes a protective barrier that’s effective and basically invisible to avoid damage over time.

How Are Dental Sealants Placed?

First, the tooth is painted with an etching substance that slightly roughens the enamel. This creates a surface that the resin will have an easier time adhering to. Then, the sealant itself is essentially painted onto the chewing surface of the molars. It’s then hardened with light, and that’s it!

Who Should Receive Dental Sealants?

Young children are the best candidates for dental sealants because, for a multitude of factors, they have the highest cavity risk of any patient population. And, when they do get cavities, they tend to appear in the back teeth, which is why sealants can be such a big help while a child is still learning to brush.

Sealants may also be recommended for teens and adults who are somewhat cavity-prone, or those who seem to need a filling every time they come to the dentist. They can go a long way in helping someone preserve their natural teeth and not need more extensive restorations and repairs over time.
