Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

Our team will typically recommend removing a tooth if:
- It is so decayed or damaged that it cannot be restored with a crown or filling.
- Gum disease has destabilized the root structure.
- More room is needed to securely place a denture.
- There isn’t enough room for the teeth to shift in response to orthodontics.
- A stubborn baby tooth is preventing an adult tooth from coming in properly.
The Process of Removing a Tooth

Of course, the first thing we do when performing a tooth extraction is make sure that the patient’s mouth is numb. Most describe feeling a little pressure or movement during the procedure, but nothing that resembles pain.
Once the patient is ready, we use an instrument to elevate the tooth, and then gently wiggle it until it just slips out. There is no “pulling” involved! After that, we place gauze over the area.
In cases where a tooth is impacted (still stuck within the gum and jawbone), we may refer a patient to a specialist who will perform a surgical extraction. This involves removing any tissue blocking access to the tooth so it can be easily taken out.
Tooth Extraction Aftercare

We’ll ask the patient to bite down on some gauze to control the bleeding in the area, and this should be changed every few hours. It’s important to take the rest of the day easy, as too much physical activity can increase bleeding and interfere with the formation of a clot.
A patient should brush and floss like normal while avoiding the extraction site and definitely AVOID drinking with a straw, smoking/vaping, or using tobacco products for the first 24 hours (preferably for the following week).
It’s wise to stock up on soft foods that require minimal chewing, so be sure to run to the store and grab some yogurt, eggs, soup, oatmeal, and other similar items ahead of the treatment.
