What Are Implant Dentures?

A traditional removable denture is held in place with metal clasps that loop around the remaining teeth, or it sits directly on the gums with the help of natural suction and a little denture adhesive.

But with implant dentures, the teeth are connected to the jawbone using small titanium posts. These mimic tooth roots and create a level of stability that a regular denture simply can’t match.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

With this type of denture, the prosthetic is affixed to the implants and can’t be removed by the patient, only their dentist. They have a more natural look and feel than removable dentures, and this also means a person doesn’t have to adopt a special hygiene routine because all they need to do is brush and floss like normal.

Removable Implant Dentures

An implant denture can also just snap onto a patient’s dental implants that will be topped with little ball joints that are connected to the underside of the prosthetic. Patients who are used to a traditional denture will find this to be more familiar, and some like the flexibility of being able to take out their teeth to clean them.

The Implant Denture Process

While each patient’s implant journey is unique to them, they all include a few basic steps:

  • Everything will start with a consultation with our team to determine if an implant denture is a good fit for your situation and goals.
  • If you decide to proceed, we’ll take an impression of your bite, remove any remaining teeth (if necessary), and place your dental implants right here at Schoharie Dental.
  • You’ll be fitted with a temporary denture so you don’t spend any time without teeth.
  • Over the next three to six months, your jawbone and implants will naturally bond through a process called osseointegration.
  • You’ll return to our office to have abutments attached, which will serve as connectors between your implants and dentures.
  • Finally, you’ll go through a series of trial dentures until we find the one with the perfect look and fit. Once the model is chosen, this will be used to cast your final denture.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

Patients who are interested in getting an implant denture need to meet three basic requirements. They need to generally be in good health, have enough jawbone to support the implant posts, and aren’t dealing with ongoing dental issues (like gum disease).

Of course, many people aren’t ready for an implant denture when they first come to see us, but we can turn them into good candidates through preliminary procedures like gum disease treatment, extractions of failing teeth, bone grafts, and more.

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

  • Implant dentures are much more stable than removable ones
  • They don’t slip or slide…ever
  • The implants stimulate the jaw to prevent bone loss
  • This helps the denture maintain its initial fit for longer
  • Implant dentures leave more room in the mouth compared to traditional ones
  • Implant dentures restore about 70-80% of a patient’s bite force (regular dentures bring back about 20-30%)
  • Patients with implant dentures are able to easily eat whatever they want
  • Maintenance only requires routine brushing, flossing, and periodic checkups
  • The implants themselves can be trusted to last for 30+ years
